Golfing in Perthshire

Staying at the Waterbury Guesthouse in Birnam is an ideal, central location if Golf is on the agenda.

Perthshire has a long golfing legacy, indeed it is ironic that James IV of Scotland, who tried to ban the game as it conflicted with archery practice, made the first recorded purchase of golfing equipment - a set of clubs from a Bow Maker in Perth in 1502!

Perthshire courses are easy to access for golfers of all abilities and are reasonably priced in comparison to counterparts further south, west and overseas. Virtually every Perthshire town and village has at least one ready to welcome non-members including Birnam and Dunkeld and they are easy to get to by car. Golf in Perthshire is becoming popular because of the quality of the courses themselves. Recent course developments ensures that there is a wide range of options for golfers of all ages and abilities. Choose from scenic Highland layouts, idyllic parkland settings, world famous centres such as Gleneagles and Rosemount at Blairgowrie and many 'hidden gems' spread throughout the area. The main challenge won't be navigating your way successfully around the course, more keeping your eye on the ball amidst such stunning surroundings.

One of Ian Botham's favourite courses is the picturesque 9-hole layout at St. Fillans on Loch Earn and the closing 9th hole at Killin has been described as one of the most scenic in Scotland with dramatic views sweeping across Loch Tay. This quality coupled with a friendly welcome from starters, clubhouse staff and local member's alike appeals to other visitors too.

Perthshire Golf can be readily summed up - great golf in dramatic surroundings, easy access to courses, great value-for-money (in high season a round will set you back on average £20) * , 40 superbly maintained courses with close proximity to a further 60 in Angus and Dundee and Fife and a warm and friendly welcome.

* If you still feel this is expensive, VisitScotland Perthshire operates two discount schemes (the 'Perthshire Green Card' valid on 18, 18-hole courses and the 'Perthshire Highlands Golf Ticket' valid on 11, 9-hole courses) to give golfers even greater value for money. We have various Golfing Breaks Packages, incorporating these schemes and are tailored to your requirements. Please call or email to discuss your requirements and we will be more than happy to help.

Perthshire is home to some of the finest inland golf courses in the world and with 40 to choose from … you'll be spoilt for choice!
